Prevent Gallstones

Gallstones are small stones that slowly develop inside the gallbladder. This condition affects up to 20 percent of women and 8 percent of men throughout the world, and can become very painful in extreme cases. Gallstones form when liquid, known as bile, located in the gallbladder hardens into bits of stone-like material.


Gallstone treatments have changed dramatically in the last quarter century. The old fashioned approach for this painful disease was to have the patient ignore the pain as long as he or she could and then operate to remove the gallbladder. With a little common sense, we finally figured out that removing an organ (the gallbladder) could cause problems in longitudinal cases.

If you have been to the hospital you probably have been diagnosed with Acute Cholecystitis (an inflamed gladder) which is caused by gallstones forming inside one of your bile ducts. And you might already be scheduled for a gallbladder surgery to permanently remove the organ.

Another way to help prevent gallstones is simply to eat more often. Since gallstones are caused by buildups of debris, making the gallbladder contract more often will help remove debris before it compacts into stones. The gallbladder contracts every time you eat, so having several small meals a day rather than two or three large ones will help keep it active and debris-free.

Milk thistle and dandelion tinctures can both help increase bile flow, which may help to cleanse the gallbladder. Peppermint can act to stop cholesterol from turning into rock-like crystals. This can play a part in preventing and curing gallstones.
